Exploring the Canadian Rockies on Cross Country Skis

Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Stretching into Alberta and British Columbia, the Canadian Rockies form the backdrop for one of the best settings for winter outdoor adventure in North America, if not the world. The region can be explored by sled dog or on snowshoes, and offers some of the best skiing, both downhill and cross country, anywhere.

With that in mind, outdoor enthusiast and writer Peter Potterfield recently made the trek up north to take in the amazing terrain and sample the best Canadian lodges in the area as well. He wrote about his expedition over at GreatOutdoors.com, sharing all the details of his mid-February cross country ski trip across miles of backcountry trails.

The trip begins with a flight into Calgary, followed by a quick one-hour drive to the mountains and the Num-TiJah Lodge, the first of five that Potterfield would visit on his journey. Over the course of the next few days, he spent the daylight hours exploring the trails, which range in difficulty from relaxed and easy to challenging and strenuous, depending on the chosen route. Evenings are spent in comfortable accomidations, sipping wine and dining on fine cuisine, with the beautiful, remote scenery just outside the window.

The article has all the details on how to get to the area, including links to all the lodges as well. There is also information on what equipment to bring or rent while you there, as the varying conditions allow for the use of a wide variety of winter gear.

Winter isn’t over for a few more weeks, and the skiing up north should be great for well into the spring. If you’re looking for a remote getaway for some backcountry skiing, the Canadian Rockies will offer everything you need.

Your Babies Little Feet

Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Two weeks ago, my wife and I had baby number 10 born into our home. A child always brings with it excitement, a great amount of joy, less sleep and new stresses. Most babies are cute and fun to hold. Most bring a different feeling into a home. But they also bring a greater responsibility and some worries. One concern that often comes to a new mom is the question: “Are there 10 fingers and toes?” To alleviate this worry, I have created a list of the 5 things to check on a newborn’s feet.

1. Most Babies Are Flat Footed. Approximately 97% of newborn feet are visually flat. This is due to the fat pad in the arch area from birth. Over time, this fat resorbs and the muscles and tendons produce the development of an arch. A flat footed baby should not be a concern. Just enjoy those cute, fat feet.

2. Flexible Feet. A newborn foot is and should be very flexible as bones are only partially developed and muscle, tendons and ligaments are still developing. A foot that is poorly positioned on the leg (tilted out or tilted in), not flexible (tight against the front of the leg) or even contorted (clubfoot) is a warning sign and should be evaluated by a foot and ankle specialist. Remember, thought, that sine the feet are soft and flexible, shoes should be purchased with the same features for a newborn foot (or even better allow them to be barefoot).

3. Baby Shape. The newborn foot shape is characteristically triangular in shape, consisting of a narrow heel and wide forefoot. The foot should be easily held between the thumb and forefinger in a “V” shape. This evaluation allows for evaluation of a foot that is “C” shaped, as the toes and forefoot area tilt in or out, instead of remaining straight. Due to the flexible nature of the infant foot, any abnormalities in shape may be modified by stretching and splinting if caught early.

4. Reflexes. In an infant, the common reflex tested is the Babinski sign. This is elicited by running a blunt instrument or finger from the bottom outside of the heel in a curve towards the big toe. The adult response is curving of toes down and turning the foot outward. In an infant, the response is spreading of the toes and elevation of the great toe. No response would be the only concerning finding at this time.

5. 10 Toes. This is commonly the first thing evaluated on the feet. Abnormalities may include toes that are abnormally large compared to other toes, too many toes, too few toes, or even absence of toes. Webbing of the toes may also be seen at this time. Treatment for many of these conditions is possible but may not always be necessary. Evaluation should be done through a specialized foot and ankle physician.

The foot is a very complex arrangement of bones, tendons, ligaments and vascular/nervous tissues. It will carry the new infant throughout life and should be protected. A key to the development of each foot is the ability to develop unimpeded by constricting clothes or shoes, as the foot with move quite regularly as muscle and tendons mature. Enjoy your babies feet, as they are part of the cuteness that is your baby.

Do You Want to Launch a Leadership Revolution?

Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

There are many terrific books that offer information on leadership as both an art and a science. They are books that every manager, in any capacity, should invest their money and time into studying and applying in their work situation. Reading such books to keep abreast of the times will help you launch a leadership revolution that will enable you to make your work environment run smoothly.

Reading books that help you become a better manager is information that deserves deeper study than just a casual reading. These types of books are driven by the intelligent analysis of leadership provided within the book. They provide many of the guiding principles that make leadership a science. Leadership books that teach are balanced with the emotional intelligence that makes leadership an art.

The principles learned in books about management are given in explanations we are sure to hear repeated as better management practices are taught and discussed in the future. This is especially true of concepts like: “the art and science of leadership”; “five levels of leadership”; and, “the tri-lateral leadership ledger.”

What’s in a word?

Before you start gleaning insights from reading leadership books, I want to suggest you take a moment to consider the titles and what they mean. As you do so, why not apply the concepts to your own life and leadership scenario? Why not look at how they impact your life?

It always helps to pause a moment to challenge our own assumptions. I am always an advocate of the analysis process. (After all I paid a lot of graduate tuition to learn analysis processes and it would be a shame to let those thousands go to waste.)

I suggest that you take a moment and consider three words that are key to management applications, and that you learn from reading books that teach leadership skills. These are words that if you never even pick up a book, just pausing to consider their definitions and applying them with what you already know can be a mini refresher course in leadership. These words are “launch,” “leadership,” and “revolution.”

It will often expand your thinking to look at the different definitions of a word in a dictionary. That is the expansion of thinking you will find here. You will find definitions of the words: launch, leadership, and revolution. With the exception of “leadership, the definitions are correlated to personality types.

The four personality types are: Choleric, Sanguine, Melancholy, and Phlegmatic. Cholerics lead through assertiveness and strength of will; Sanguines through charm; Melancholies through rules and systems; and Phlegmatics lead by consensus or mentoring.

Leadership definitions were not correlated with any specific type since all types can be leaders. As you read them, keep in mind you are probably a combination of two or more personality types. Don’t try to understand yourself using one personality type only. There are numerous web articles about personality types if you want to learn more.

What is leadership?

To lead is to direct or control the movement of something. It is often associated with authority. Another meaning is to influence the action of others by example. A definition which brings in the concept of future vision is “to guide on a way by going in advance”. Using these definitions you are you are ready to define “leadership”.

Definition 1: Leadership is an office or position according to Merriam-Webster. You may have a position in a corporation, a church, a business to which has been given to you. You may also have obtained it by virtue of being a founder.

Definition 2: Leadership is a capacity to lead. People may have said to you, “You have leadership”. They mean that they see in you something that they often attribute to a natural talent for leadership.

Definition 3: Leadership was also defined as the act or moment of leadership. It makes me think of you as stepping forward and rising to show leadership because the moment called for it.

Definition 4: Leadership is also given a collective definition. It is a select group of people at a high level in the hierarchy of an organization, movement, or institution who collective have the power to control direction and activities. In politics you might talk about party leadership in this sense.

How would different personalities define launching?

Definition 1: The first meaning of launch is “To hurl forward or throw. This is a great definition for a “choleric” personality. If you are choleric you want start as fast as you can and as hard as you can. It is a “Ready, Fire, Aim” type leader. Maybe it is you.

Definition 2: Merriam-Webster also defines launch as to “set into energetically, such as to launch a speech.” This is definitely a sanguine. If you are sanguine you love the stage and whatever you do, you are going to get excited enough to generate some energy.

Definition 3: The third definition is in the context of computer programming. You load a program and then run it. You launch it. This has to be a definition that will resonate with you if you are a melancholy. You want lots of rules. (Computer programs have lots of protocols.) And then, you want things to run the same way, over and over.

Definition 4: There are two more definitions from Merriam-Webster that both describe you if you are phlegmatic. One definition is, “to make a start or to introduce”. The other is “to initiate through self-propulsion” such as launching a rocket. Think about starting someone else out in a business or launching a new graduate into their career.

If you are phlegmatic are probably sensitive about other people. You are a person who knows how to help others because you understand who they are. You will enjoy launching someone you care about into something beneficial. At the same time, you do not feel a need to control them. You want them to become self-propelled.

How would the different personalities define revolution?

Definition 1: The “overthrow of one government and substitution of another by the governed”. This is a definition from Merriam-Webster that cholerics would like. If you are choleric you are ready to change the authority and governing structure and lead others to do something about it.

Definition2: “A sudden, radical, or complete change”. If you are sanguine you are always ready for change, perhaps even drastic change. Sanguines tend to get bored easily, and love the new. It doesn’t necessarily have to be deep or philosophical, as long as it is positive change.

Definition 3: “A fundamental change in use or technology”. If you are melancholy, any significant change in the status quo system is revolutionary for you. You lead by systems and feel uncomfortable if they are changed in large degrees.

Definition 4: “A fundamental change in the way of thinking about or visualizing something”. As a phlegmatic you lead through consensus. You would probably want to convince people to change the way they think and then let them decide to do it in their own time. That would be enough of a revolution for a consensus-driven phlegmatic.

Now that you have these definitions, work with them, decide which ones best describe you, and use them. You may find you are launching a leadership revolution in your own life.

The Story of “Roman Fever”

Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Copyright (c) 2009 James Holan

In the short story Roman Fever by Edith Wharton, the story of two women who used to be best friends is explored. The characters who are involved in the main part of the story are two women who used to be best friends when they were younger. The first is Grace Ansley, a middle aged woman who is now widowed and visiting Rome with her young daughter Barbara Ansley. The other main character is Alida Slade, another middle aged woman who is also widowed from her husband visiting Rome with her young daughter Jenny Slade. The nonliving character that connects both of the women in the novel is Alida’s now departed husband, Delphin Slade.

The story opens with two women who have not seen each other in twenty-five years, since the last time they were in Rome. This time they are visiting the city with their young daughters, who are roughly the same age and seem to be getting along very well. Both women used to be friends when they were young but now seem to have some kind of animosity between them. As the story builds the reader learns that the animosity around the two women is formed over a former love interest they both shared and whom one of them married. The man in question is the now passed Delphin Slade who both women took an interest in when they were younger. Apparently, the two women were in competition over him back when they were in Rome together twenty-five years prior. At the time Alida was the one dating Delphin and in order to prove that she was the one he wanted to be with she wrote a fake letter to Grace asking Delphin to meet her at the Coliseum one night. Thinking she is being crafty, Alida tells Grace, now twenty-five years later, that the letter had not come from Delphin but Alida herself. Grace has a surprise for Alida, however, stating that the two had meet up all those years ago. Stunned Alida decides to try to pull a fast one on Grace, stating, “I had everything; I had him [Delphin] for twenty-five years. And you had nothing but that one letter that he didn’t write.” Grace, however is much quicker than Alida and comes back with an unexpected twist, by telling her former friend something she did not expect at all, “I had Barbara.”

Thus, Grace shows the reader that the encounter with Delphin was a lot more productive than Alida ever imagined, by producing an illegitimate child by Delphin.

Tapestry Maps – The World at Your Fingertips – FREE Articles Directory

Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

We, as humans have an inbuilt curiosity in the world around us. A curiosity which drove the first man to the end of the world, a world everyone previously believed to be flat. Later it would send others to the moon. As people learned more of the world around them, they sought a way to record their discoveries, and these records became known as Maps. Tapestry Maps add a new dimension to these ancient maps which were indeed, regarded as works of art. Like Tapestries, they were considered of great value to those who possessed them. Therefore, Tapestry Maps are two remarkable works of art, combined into one. For those people who were born journeymen, Tapestry Maps are another exciting way to feed the desire to study and familiarize ourselves with the planet we live upon. A Tapestry Map might record a time and place significant in our lives, a fabulously unique way to catalogue our travels and experiences. A far cry from the ‘tourist bait’ souvenirs which usually signify nothing, and are, invariably, of little value. Tapestry Maps add charm and beauty to a room and also provide a focal point for interesting conversation.

Conquering uncharted horizons has been the obsession of man since time began. Therefore, it seems only natural that even today, we find Tapestry Maps so appealing. The Egyptians, Babylonians and of course, the Greeks were some of the most advanced civilizations of ancient times. It was their fascination of geography that compelled them to create maps. Today, you will find a huge variety of Tapestry Maps available, beautiful ancient maps of the world, the West Indies, Jerusalem and Europe, for example. Around 1400, the very first ‘world map’ was created by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy. The very first Tapestry Maps were produced during the sixteenth and seventeenth century, and they were of great interest to those who were lucky enough to own them. Reproductions of ancient maps, through Tapestries, reveals their remarkable attention to detail. This is why so many collectors love the authenticity of Tapestry Maps.

Many modern Tapestry Maps are based on ancient maps and are, most definitely, considered works of art. With such a meticulous attention to detail, there are few people who would not be impressed with these Tapestries. Many of these Tapestries feature mythical creatures and gods, as did much of the ancient cartography, adding to their decorativeness and interest. This type of old world Tapestry Map is highly popular. If cartography is as equally important to you as the artistic imagination of the draftsman who created it, these Tapestries are definitely an appropriate choice. Of course, if you do not wish to have Mermaids and Gods embellished on your Tapestry Map, you will find a variety of more modern, non embellished, Tapestries available. Tapestry Maps stay true to their original purpose, focusing on the charts themselves. The incredible detail and artistry of Tapestry Maps provoke intrigue and interest in all those who view them. If cartography is something which appeals to you, you will love the depth and authenticity of Tapestry Maps.

A classic world Tapestry Map often features two globes which depicts both the ancient Eastern and Western worlds. Others might reflect the style of one of the most famous maps ever made, “Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica Ac Hydrographica Tabula”. A map created in 1630 by Henricus Hondius, a Dutch cartographer. However, whichever Tapestry Map you prefer, composition is important to everyone. Although both styles are highly popular Tapestry compositions, there are many other options available to you. Of course, where you intend to hang your Tapestry will also have a huge influence on your decisions. Lighting is important, especially with regards to Tapestry Maps. Insufficient light will not only affect the overall impact of your Tapestry within the room, it will also mean important detailing is lost. Tapestries are available in various sizes. Nevertheless, whether it is large or small, all Tapestries need appropriate lighting to display their true beauty, and without doubt, Tapestry Maps are beautiful. Of course, direct sunlight is not recommended. Choose wisely and your Tapestry Map will be around to enjoy for many generations to come. Because such beauty as this is timeless, as is people’s intrigue of the world around them.

Towable RV’s Part II

Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Towable RV’s Part II

There are two main categories of recreational vehicles (RV’s); motorized and towable. Towable RV’s include fifth wheels, travel trailers, folding/tent/pop-up campers, toy haulers, and park models. Discussion of fifth wheels and travel trailers were covered in part I of this article. In this article, part II, discussion of folding/tent/pop-up campers, toy haulers, and park models will be discussed.

FOLDING/TENT/POP-UP CAMPERS
Folding camper, tent camper, and pop-up camper are all terms for the same type of camper: a camper that folds down into a hard side base “box” unit, has pull-out sleeping areas with tent-like canvas sides and canvas camper sides with screened windows and clear plastic coverings for the windows. There are also hybrid models that have hard sides instead of the canvas sides, but still have the canvas slide-out sleeping areas on either end.

These campers have some great advantages. They are lightweight which makes them easier to tow than fifth wheels or travel trailers, have a low profile so they do not obstruct your view while driving, are easy to store because they do not take up a huge amount of space, and are the most reasonably priced towable camper.

Pop-up campers are a nice upgrade from a tent because they are more comfortable for sleeping and provide better protection from the elements. Most pop-up campers have heaters, and air conditioners can usually be installed as an option so the camper will be comfortable when the temperatures get cool in the fall and also when it’s over 100 degrees in the summer and you’re in a campsite with no breezes to help cool you off.

Pop-up campers are typically the first camper people purchase because of the lower cost.

The “box” part of a pop-up camper ranges in length from 8-18 feet. After the camper is popped up and the sleeping areas are slid out, the camper can reach a length of approximately 25 feet. In addition, some pop-up campers have slide-out options that add more interior space and many have optional screen room packages that add even more interior space. Depending on what model and brand of pop-up camper you purchase there are bathroom facilities in the camper along with adequate cooking areas, a dining area and relaxation area. Most pop-up campers also have a stove that can be hooked to the outside of the camper where grease spatters and food that boils over the top of the cooking pot are easier to clean up.

The sleeping areas are on either end of the camper and are much like a tent except that you’re sleeping on a mattress and not the ground or a cot or an inflatable mattress, and you have the benefit of heating or air conditioning if you have those features in your pop-up. One note about the mattresses in pop-up campers: they are often thin and not nearly as comfortable as a regular mattress. Buy an eggshell type foam topper for the mattresses. It will make a big difference.

There isn’t a lot of privacy in a pop-up camper though. The privacy you do get is obtained by pulling a curtain closed. And space is at a premium, even in the larger units with slide-outs.

Our family’s first camper was a Coleman popup camper and we loved it. It was easy to store, easy to tow, easy to maneuver into a campsite, easy on our pocketbook, and easy to maintain.

The biggest downside to a pop-up camper is the setup and takedown time. There’s no getting around the fact that they are a lot of work to set up. After you arrive at your campsite and have your trailer parked where you want it the camper has to be unfolded, usually with a hand crank although mechanical push button systems are becoming popular. The beds then have to be slid out and the support poles outside and inside need to put in place. The door needs to be slid down from the ceiling and put in place. And the entire inside needs to be unfolded and unpacked.

If you have two people working together and you get a system going, you can get your camper and campsite set up in about an hour, which isn’t bad. But you might get jealous if someone with a fifth wheel or travel trailer pulls in the site next to you and you see that it only takes them 10 minutes to get everything set up—including getting their campfire going.

Another disadvantage with a pop-up camper is inclement weather. Windy conditions may make you wonder if your camper is going to blow away like Dorothy’s house in the Wizard of Oz. Rain isn’t as bad but you need to make sure too much rain doesn’t collect on top of the canvas in the sleeping areas and collapse them. Rain is not fun at all if you have to take the camper down while it’s raining. If that happens you’ll have to pop the camper back up when you get it home to dry out the canvas or it will mold and mildew.

Even though there are disadvantages, pop-up campers are a good choice if you don’t have a lot of money to invest in a camper. And camping is a lot of fun. It’s worth putting up with a few inconveniences.

TOY HAULERS
Toy haulers, or sport utility trailers, are a fairly new type of towable trailer. They are a travel trailer or fifth wheel trailer with a cargo area either in the front or the rear for all your “toys” (think four-wheelers, snowmobiles, canoes, jet-skis, dune buggies, etc.).

They have a built-in ramp so once you arrive at your destination it is easy to get things in and out. And it’s a nice to be able to put things back in the cargo area at night for safekeeping or when its raining.

Other than the cargo area, they are pretty much like any other travel trailer or fifth wheel except the living area will be smaller. They also usually come with (or have the option of adding on) at least one generator, a fuel tank and a larger than normal water tank.

Some people who own toy haulers put furniture in the cargo area when they are going camping somewhere and are not taking any “toys” with them. The cargo area then becomes a spacious living room.

PARK MODELS
A park model is a lot like a small mobile home except it is designed to be transported and hooked up to utilities. But they are not meant to be transported frequently.

A park model is a good choice for a permanent campsite that is rented by the year. The trailer is transported to the site, set up, and left there for the year (or longer depending on the contract). They are also a good choice as a cottage if local ordinances allow it.

Park model trailers have all the amenities of home. Some have loft areas but they are definitely designed for children because the ceilings are very low,

How do you decide which RV/trailer/camper is right for you? Decide what your needs are and what you can afford. Then shop around and see what you like. Talk to people who already own RV’s. Find out what they do and don’t like about their camper. If you’re not sure you are going to like camping and want to try it out before you invest in an RV, consider renting one for a week so you can try it out without a huge investment. Or, if you have family or friends with an RV, ask to borrow theirs.

Meditation Basics: Choosing The Incense Right For You!

Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Meditation sessions are fantastic to help you manage and balance your day-to-day life. One of the important elements you can include as part of your meditation session is incense and for a beginner this really is an important tool and can make the difference between a successful meditation session and an unsuccessful meditation session.

Humans have five core senses including touch, sight, hearing, taste and smell. Each sense plays a role in keeping your mind active and playing a role in the way you feel. The brain takes each of the sensory inputs from these senses and defines how you are going to react to your surrounding. For example, research has found that certain types of music influences the way shoppers will actually purchase products.

One research organisation found that Baroque Music played at 60 beats per minute will infact influence shoppers to spend an additional 38% in their shops. Further to this the use of incense during a meditation session can in fact make a huge difference between a successful meditation session simply because the incense will influence the sense of smell.

The most important thing you can do is to choose the right incense type. Let us take a moment to look at the different types of incense choices. I should note one thing, that there are many different incense choices which will influence your choice of incense.

#1 Starting Out – Lavender Fragrance and Incense

When you are starting out with meditation you will often be stressed, tense and all those other horrible feelings and the best type of incense to start out with is Lavender. There are many theory’s as to why lavender is a create start off tool but the bottom line we have learnt that it relaxes you and distresses you.

So, when starting out use the lavender incense in either a stick or powder form. The best incense type from a safety point of you is the stick incense. If you choose to use the powder incense type make sure that you put sand over the incense once you have finished using it.

#2 Inducing Sleep – Violet or Jasmine Incense

If your meditation session is to help induce sleep, then whilst incense may help the process of relaxation, the best type of incense to consider is the violet or jasmine incense.

#3 Sexual Energy – Rose, Gardenia or Orange Blossoms

If your meditation session is with your partner to help increase sexual desire and passion, then the best type of incense is Rose, Gardenia or Orange Blossoms. More so, if you are trying to use meditation to help sexual desire then in conjunction with the incense look at using fragrance oils as well to help spark the feeling of passion.

#4 Mood Enhancement – Fruity Fragrances

Mood enhancement incenses like fruity scents will help your mood. For example if you are feeling down then using fruit based oils and incenses like berries, bananas, melons, plum and apricot will enhance your internal mood. Might I also say your partners as well.

#5 Energy Enhancements – Citrus Fragrances

If your meditations are about getting that much needed energy and freshening the mind then the citrus fruit incense is the choice for you. You need to consider incense like bergamot, mandarins, orange, apple and even grapefruit. Even Citronella is a fantastic citrus scent for this meditation type plus it repels the moths and more importantly the mosquitos.

#6 The Sweet Smell Enhancements – Vanilla Fragrances

Sweet smell enhancements like coffee and peppermint can make a huge difference to your meditation session. The key reason we use these types of incense is simply to enhance our feelings. These also help bring forward clarity and stimulation and energy.

One word of warning though, be careful with some herbs and spices. Some herbs and spices can form foul smelling odours when burned and more so, some spices can be poisonous.

Choosing the right incense can make a huge difference towards a successful meditation session. When you are starting out then the best incense you should be using is Lavender but if you have mastered the basics then you could even try out a combination of these incense types.

Learning Meditation does not have to be difficult with our Book on Meditation. We also have Music Meditation CDs available from our website as well.
